Kevin Gates has been dropping new tracks every once in a while over the past few weeks ago. Fans were guessing the rapper would probably drop a full length project. Even though we don’t have a full length project, Gates does release a new EP of 6 songs called Only the Generals Gon Understand.

Since 2013, Kevin Gates has established a run of quality projects that spotlight his emotionally resonant striver raps. He’s one of the few street artists that can convey love and monogamy convincingly. When he harmonizes, “I’ve been misused, what the f*ck you want my heart for” over the country-ish stomp of “Hard For,” you feel his confusion. Islah ranges from trap hammers like “La Familia,” to dramatic, synth-driven tracks like “2 Phones” and “Ask for More.” But what stands out is how his voice sounds so naturally melodic, and how he exudes so much passion in his songs. He hearkens to an earlier era when the Dirty South stood for hardscrabble authenticity.

EDITORS’ NOTES
The Baton Rouge rapper Kevin Gates has never been much for jokes. Earnest, unsparing, and intensely personal, his full-length major-label debut is a downcast trip through tales of the grind (“La Familia”) romantic woes (“Pride”), and the trials of balancing the two (“2 Phones”). He delivers it all with enough charm and hope to keep things from getting too dark or gritty. “Man in the mirror you way outta order,” he raps on “The Truth”—fitting words for an artist who named his album (and his daughter, for that matter) after an Arabic word meaning to improve.

Talented
He should just use his talents a bit more but some of it showed on the album
Straight Garbage
Oh my god I’ve lost faith in humanity. He sounds like he’s constipated and he’s on drugs for the hook. When he actually is rapping he’s so bad. I mean SO BAD. Oh my god I could rap better. All he’s doing is talking slightly faster than average. I can’t believe 208 people 5 starred this album. How is two phones so popular? All he does is sing loudly while acting constipated and talking faster than normal, that’s how you get hits now a days guys. I’m done.
Worst album of 2015-16
Your average other people listen to this so will listen track, nothing compared to the other albums, the lyricism is so low you might have a donkey rapping, rn kendrick lamar is shaking his head
